"Friends of Great Chart"

The Friends of Great Chart sent a total of 5,921 parcels and 989 letters to the "Boys" on active service between 1915 and 1918.  
In reply the Boys sent back 1,605 letters and a large number of "field cards".

These letters were kept by the Friends and pinned into books for the Village to see.  They survive today.  The letters are all hand written by the Boys at the front (and others), and whilst they say little about exactly where they were due to potential censorship, they do provide a fascinating insight into their lives.  The letters and parcels sent by the Friends were very gratefully received and the boys were always very happy for the extra luxury food that supplemented their megre diet. The letters and parcels showed the boys that they were not forgotten by the Village. Receipt of the letters was very important boost to their morale.

These 1,605 letters may be found in 22 Volumes in the archives of the Kent History and Library Centre. Maidstone, Kent. under reference CH144, followed by the volume reference shown.
